One of the major points of my campaign is improving our healthcare. I believe that we need a healthcare system that guarantees a basic level of care for all people. This includes, but isn’t limited to: preventative care; basic services like blood tests, X-Rays, vaccines, mental health consults, mainstream prescriptions, etc.
I believe that the only way that we can accomplish that while keeping costs controlled is by operating a public health care system in parallel with the existing private system. In this new system, the private healthcare industry’s role would primarily be to cover more serious health concerns that wouldn’t be covered by public healthcare.
Under the current system, many people cannot afford to deal with their health problems until it’s too late. Investing in preventative medicine will pay dividends, because it is much simpler and easier to deal with problems as they pop up instead of waiting to tackle them until they’re complicated, catastrophic, or even life threatening. Benjamin Franklin once said, “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure” – and that’s as true today as it’s ever been.
